Entertainment

Cinema

The big suburban malls of Woden, Belconnen and Tuggeranong have Hoyts multiplexes, but for arthouse and independent cinema try the Dendy Canberra Centre in the city. Manuka Greater Union has a wide range of interesting new releases. See the Canberra Times for details of current films.

Live music

Canberra has a surprisingly busy music scene and there is usually a good selection of live music around town, ranging from rock gigs at the ANU Union Bar to mellow jazz or soul at Tilley’s Devine Cafe in Lyneham. Big acts play at the Canberra Theatre Centre or the Royal Theatre, both in the city centre. You will find nightclubs aplenty in Civic, Kingston, Manuka and Braddon. For gig details pick up a copy of the Canberra Times on Thursday for its lift-out entertainment guide ‘Fly’ or look for the free street magazine BMA.

Classical music and performing arts

The main venue for performing arts is the Canberra Theatre Centre. A couple of smaller venues around town, such as Gorman House Arts Centre in Braddon and the Street Theatre on Childers Street, cater to more eclectic tastes. Classical music concerts most often take place at Llewellyn Hall, part of the ANU’s Canberra School of Music, in Acton. See the Canberra Times for details of what’s on.
