Travel to Phillip Island this weekend and you’ll find this normally peaceful island inundated with crowds who’ve come to watch the annual Superbike World Championship.
But there are plenty of reasons, apart from the superbikes, to visit Phillip Island. We’ve picked five of our favourites.
The wildlife: Thousands of visitors flock to the island every year to see the Penguin Parade, where small penguins making their way back to their homes in the dunes at dusk after a day in the ocean.
The island is also home to the largest wild colony of fur seals in Australia, and you can take a two-hour cruise from Cowes to see the seals frolic at Seal Bay.
Or for something land-based, Phillip Island Wildlife Park is home to an array of Australian animals. Hand-feeding the kangaroos is a highlight.
Go-kart on a replica Grand Prix track: Race around a replica of the Grand Prix track on a go-kart (unfortunately, there are no superbikes on offer).
Situated next to the actual Grand Prix track and with stunning views out to Bass Strait, you can enjoy scenic views as you race around the track.Fishing: Phillip Island has more than its fair share of excellent fishing spots. You can stay in town and try your luck at Cowes jetty, or hire a boat and head out to rich fishing grounds like Cat Bay. Make sure to check the regulations at the visitor centre.
Exploring Churchill Island: Hidden off Phillip Island is the tiny Churchill Island. This historic island has been farmed since the 1850s and offers fascinating insights into the early settlement of Victoria, as well as incredible views towards Phillip Island and Western Port.
Coastal scenery: Explore the island’s spectacular coastline, from the wild surf at Woolamai Surf Beach to the headland scenery of the Nobbies.
There are plenty of walking tracks near the coast, or you can always a hire a boat or kayak if you wish to see it all from the water.
