When the leaves start to change colour and water cooler talk turns again to the rugby and AFL, it can only mean one thing – autumn is upon us. Autumn is a festive season in Australia, and whether you’re close to home or on the other side of the country, there is sure to be a carnival, market or festival nearby that’s celebrating the season. And with stunning natural scenery and delicious produce on offer, there’s certainly a lot to celebrate. We’ve picked our top five – but be sure to let us know which festivals are on your autumn list.
Autumn Festival, Bright, Victoria
Each year, Bright in Victoria’s High Country celebrates autumn with a two-week festival. Must-see events include the Autumn Ball and the big parade on Gala Day.
Canberra Festival Balloon Spectacular, Australian Capital Territory
The second week in March will see the skies above Canberra filled with hot-air balloons. Keep your eye out for the more unusually shaped balloons (this year there’ll be a kangaroo).
Orange F.O.O.D week, New South Wales
For a week in April, Orange enjoys the food and produce of central-west New South Wales with events including a night market and the neighbourly 100-mile dinner.
Ord Valley Muster, Kununurra, Western Australia
The main drawcard of this ten-day festival is the Kimberley Moon Festival, which will see headline acts Jimmy Barnes and Vanessa Amorosi entertain the crowds under the (hopefully) full moon.
WOMADelaide, Adelaide, South Australia
WOMADelaide is always worth a visit for both its spectacular line-up of music acts from all over the world and its setting in the gorgeous Botanic Gardens of Adelaide.
