What sort of traveller are you? Do you like pottering around country towns or are you more at home with a spanner in hand, knocking a new part together for your caravan? Do you like meeting up with other travellers on the road or are you the sort to travel in splendid isolation?
We’ve picked five vehicle-based homes and come up with travel types based on your set of wheels. Do you think we’ve picked your travel type? Let us know in the comments section below.
Vintage caravan: Let’s be honest – you’re probably a little bit trendy. You like being surrounded by nice things, many of which you’ve made yourself. While you love visiting spectacular places in Australia, you’re just as happy finding an out-of-the-way cafe and making friends with the owner. How else are you going to get their recipe for jam compote?
After a long day on the road, you’re likely to be found having a cup of home-brewed tea with some friends around the campfire, drinking out of mugs bought from a Country Women’s Association fair.
Second-hand caravan: You are a sensible, do-it-yourself type. You’ve never met a project that you didn’t like, whether it’s fixing an old caravan to helping out others stuck on the side of the road. If someone needs a hand you’re always happy to help using your arsenal of tools.
You like being busy, so you might mix up your caravan travels with a homestay, a stint on a farm or some boat travel. You’re most likely to be found tinkering with your caravan while having a beer with mates at the end of the day.
A new caravan with all the mod cons: You’re happy to be adventurous because you know you’ve got a comfortable home on wheels waiting for you at the end of the day. To you, part of the fun of travelling is the camaraderie you share with the others on the road. You’re more likely to be found in a caravan park than at a more isolated campsite – especially since you want other travellers to admire your flashy wheels.
5th-wheeler: Your caravan is your castle. You’re probably a permanent traveller, and your 5th-wheeler gives you enough space for a life on the road.
5th- wheelers are mainly found in America, so you’ve had to overcome difficulties like servicing and support in order to have the biggest vehicle on the road. You like your comforts, and prefer being surrounded by other travellers. You won’t be going off the beaten track in this vehicle.
Camper trailer: You’re an adventurer who doesn’t mind solitary travel. After all, camper trailers are known for their flexibility, as you don’t need a powered site or a caravan park to set up your home for the night.
Equally comfortable surrounded by new friends made on the road or setting up alone in one of Australia’s many isolated spots, you’re not going to let a caravan get in the way of experiencing everything this country has to offer.
Who knows where we’ll find you at the end of the day? You could be camping overnight at Western Australia’s Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park or hanging out at Victoria’s Mallacoota Foreshore Holiday Park with some new friends.
