Penguin Parade, Phillip Island, Tourism VictoriaTravel to Phillip Island this weekend and you’ll find this normally peaceful island inundated with crowds who’ve come to watch the annual Superbike World Championship.

But there are plenty of reasons, apart from the superbikes, to visit Phillip Island. We’ve picked five of our favourites.

The wildlife: Thousands of visitors flock to the island every year to see the Penguin Parade, where small penguins making their way back to their homes in the dunes at dusk after a day in the ocean.

The island is also home to the largest wild colony of fur seals in Australia, and you can take a two-hour cruise from Cowes to see the seals frolic at Seal Bay.Seal Cove, Phillip Island, Tourism Victoria Or for something land-based, Phillip Island Wildlife Park is home to an array of Australian animals. Hand-feeding the kangaroos is a highlight.

Walk in Kosciuszko National Park

Even when its slopes aren’t covered with snow, Kosciuszko National Park is a charming place to visit. There are a variety of trails for the eager bushwalker, including the walk from Thredbo to the peak of Mount Kosciuszko, the tallest mountain in Australia.

As a UNESCO Biosphere reserve, the park is home to numerous plant species that cannot be found anywhere else in the world, as well as rare wildlife, such as the pygmy possum.
